Mr. Layton,
I remember when back in the summer of 2004 (or was it 2005) you met with my late friend and Palestinian brother, Rezeq Faraj while you were taking French courses in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu. You were very much in favour of recognizing certain fundamental rights for the Palestinians, according to what Rezeq told me subsequent to your informal meeting with him.
A few weeks later you went on record stating that the wall which Israel was building around the West Bank and Jerusalem (declared illegal by the International Court of Justice in July 2004) was ''important for Israel's security.'' The wall's purpose has little to do with security and a lot to do with the logistics of apartheid.
That was when I finally got your number, so I for one am not in the least surprised by your weak stand on the flotilla to Gaza and the Canadian Boat to Gaza. I would have been astonished had you shown any intestinal fortitude at all on the question of Gaza or the Middle East for that matter. I was once a candidate for the NDP in the 1988 election. I was drawn to the NDP because of my admiration for Tommy Douglas and Thérèse Casgrain.
You and Thomas Mulcair are a far cry from their moral strength. Remember the old Abraham Lincoln adage: ''You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time.''
